Niall Quinn joined Sunderland from Manchester City in August 1996 for a club record £1.3 million. His partnership with Kevin Phillips helped Sunderland win the Championship in 1999, and in 1999-2000 back in the Premier League, Quinn made 38 league appearances, scoring 14 goals as Sunderland finished in seventh position. Kevin Phillips played in every league game, scoring 30 league goals.
